Saline at a glance

Census 2020, Census Bureau 2025 estimate and American Community Survey 2020–2024.

A steady, owner-occupied town

8,948 residents in 2020 and an estimated 9,001 in 2025, up 0.7%. About 69% of households own their home, and 63.9% of homes are single-family detached houses.

Median home built in 1980

About half the homes predate 1980, and 8.1% were built before 1940. The rest is newer construction around the older core.

Named for salt springs

Surveyor Orange Risdon founded Saline in 1832, and it became a city in 1931. The Saline River runs through town and takes its name from nearby salt springs.

Shared schools

The southern part of neighboring Pittsfield Township is in Saline Area Schools, so many households with a Saline connection actually live in the township.

Where mold tends to start in Saline homes

In a town where about half the homes were built after 1980, the usual suspects are basements and bathrooms rather than old plaster walls. Snowmelt and spring rain can load the soil around a foundation, and summer air is humid: average dew points near 61°F in July and August at Detroit Metro airport (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). A cool basement wall can sweat in that air.

Prevention steps the City of Ann Arbor recommends for its own homeowners work in Saline too:

  • Extend downspouts and slope soil away from the house
  • Ask a plumber about a backwater or check valve on the sewer lead
  • Keep indoor humidity below 60% (EPA says ideally 30 to 50%)
  • Test the sump pump before spring, not during a storm

How quotes work for a Saline home

  1. Describe it once

Where you see or smell mold, how big it looks, and whether there was a leak or water in the basement.

  2. Companies reply

Independent local mold companies that serve Saline can contact you with questions or a visit time.

  3. Compare written scopes

Look for containment, removal, drying, the moisture fix and any clearance check, line by line.

  4. Check the rebuild

If drywall or insulation goes back in, confirm the LARA license for that part of the job.

Michigan license check

Michigan doesn't license mold remediation companies, and the state health department doesn't certify mold remediators or testers. Repair and rebuild work of $600 or more, such as replacing drywall or insulation, generally needs a Residential Builder or Maintenance & Alteration license from LARA (MCL 339.2401–2404). Ask for the license number and verify it with LARA.

EPA says testing usually isn't needed when you can see mold, and Michigan's health department doesn't recommend routine testing. Testing earns its cost mainly for hidden mold, disputes, a home sale or a clearance check. In Michigan, landlords must keep rentals fit for the use intended and in reasonable repair (MCL 554.139). Mold isn't named in the law, but the leaks behind it usually are the landlord's to fix. This is general information, not legal advice.

Health: EPA and CDC say mold can cause allergic and irritant reactions; people with asthma, allergies or weakened immune systems may be more sensitive. See a doctor for symptoms.

Saline mold questions

My Saline house was built in the 1990s. Can it still get mold?

Yes. Newer homes get mold too, usually from a specific water source: a sump pump that couldn't keep up, a leaking supply line, a bath fan that doesn't vent outside, or a finished basement wall that stayed damp. Find and fix the water first; the cleanup won't last otherwise.

Is the mold small enough to clean myself?

For areas under about 10 square feet, EPA says homeowners can often clean it themselves. Fix the moisture, wear gloves and eye protection, and bag up porous materials like carpet pad that stayed wet. Larger areas, mold inside walls, or anyone in the home with asthma or a weak immune system are good reasons to get quotes.

Who checks the license of a Saline mold company?

No one does it for you, so ask. Michigan has no mold license, but repair and rebuild work of $600 or more generally needs a LARA Residential Builder or Maintenance & Alteration license. Ask each company for the number and look it up with LARA before you sign.
