Tell us about the mold

No obligation. Independent local companies reply to you directly.

What happens next

  1. Your request is passed along

It goes to independent mold companies that work in your town. Someone may call or text if a key detail is missing, such as your ZIP code or a rough size.

  2. Companies contact you

They may ask questions, ask for photos or set a time to look. Describe your situation any time; companies reply on their own schedules.

  3. You compare and decide

Ask each company for an itemized written estimate, and for its LARA license number if the job includes repair or rebuild work. Quotes are free, and you are not obligated to hire anyone.

What helps companies quote accurately

A few details save a lot of back and forth. You don't need all of them, and rough is fine.

  • Where it is. The basement, a bathroom ceiling, the attic, a crawl space, a closet, or a wall that got wet. Include your town or ZIP code.
  • Roughly how big. A dinner plate, a 3 by 3 foot patch, one wall, a whole room. Companies will measure. For areas under about 10 square feet, EPA says homeowners can often clean it themselves.
  • The water source, if you know it. A plumbing leak, a roof leak or ice dam, a sump pump that failed, a sewer backup, seepage through a foundation wall, or high humidity.
  • When it got wet. Days ago, weeks ago, or not sure. EPA advises drying water-damaged areas within 24 to 48 hours, so timing helps a company plan.
  • Finished or unfinished. Say whether the space has drywall, carpet or insulation, since that changes the scope.
  • Own or rent. Renters should tell the landlord in writing first and keep a copy. In Ann Arbor, the next step is Rental Housing Services (734-794-6264). U-M students can contact Student Legal Services.
  • Photos later. Companies may ask for photos. Take pictures and video now, before anything is moved, cleaned or torn out, and note the date.

Before you sign anything. Michigan doesn't license mold remediation companies, and the state health department doesn't certify mold remediators or testers. Repair and rebuild work of $600 or more, such as replacing drywall or insulation, generally needs a Residential Builder or Maintenance & Alteration license from LARA (MCL 339.2401–2404). Ask for the license number and verify it with LARA. If you sign a contract at your home, you generally have 3 business days to cancel it (MCL 445.111–.113).

EPA says testing usually isn't needed when you can see mold, and Michigan's health department doesn't recommend routine testing. If you do want testing, consider a tester who is independent of the remediation company.
